Local 35 of the International Union of Elevator Constructors (IUEC) was chartered on July 18, 1911, in Albany, New York. Today, Local 35 proudly represents the elevator constructors of 15 counties in New York, as well as large areas in Green County and Columbia County.

Initial Leadership

On the day Local 35 was chartered over one hundred and ten years ago, the official Roll of Officers was as follows: President: Andrew Burke, Vice President: John Scott, Secretary, Treasurer: Sam Millman, Recording Secretary: Charles Nichalson, Trustee: Charles Gillies, Trustee: G Fergisen, Conductor: John Smith, Outer Guard: John Sweeny, Inner Guard: Homer Ransom.

Notable projects

Albany’s South Mall Development (Empire State Plaza) started in 1965 and ended in 1978. The project consisted of approximately 150 units from 44 stops down to a two-stop hydraulic and 30 escalators. Lake Placid was the home of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics, and IUEC constructors installed many elevators for the 1980 games. IUEC professionals continue to maintain these elevators, as well as escalators at the historic Saratoga Race Track.

The National Elevator Industry Educational Program (NEIEP) is responsible for training and educating the members of Local 35. NEIEP’s apprenticeship program and continuing education (CE) options ensure Local 35 constructors remain the most highly-trained and safest professionals in the industry.
